The solar coverage gap in regional Australia

We mapped the 1,250 solar companies in our directory that have usable location data. They sit in 545 postcodes. Here is what thin local coverage costs a homeowner, and how to get real competition into your quotes anyway.

The solar coverage gap in regional Australia

When you search “solar installers near me” from a country town, the honest answer is often that there is no installer near you. Of the 1,611 solar companies in the Solar Cobber directory, 1,250 have usable location data, and those 1,250 are based in just 545 postcodes across the whole country, as at 2 August 2026.

That number needs a warning label. It is the count of postcodes where a company in our directory has a registered address. It is not the count of postcodes where you can get solar installed. Confusing the two would give you a much gloomier picture than reality. Plenty of Australians with no local installer still get a good system fitted by a crew that drives in. This post is about what changes when that is your only option.

What our coverage data actually shows

The 743 suburbs sit inside 545 postcodes because one postcode often covers several suburbs. Spread 1,250 companies over 545 postcodes and you get about two per postcode on average, though that is a straight division and the real spread is very lumpy.

What this data does prove: where solar businesses in our directory put their business address. Companies tend to base themselves near steady work, near a warehouse, and near the tradespeople they hire.

What this data does not prove: where solar is available to buy. A registered address is not a service area. Many companies serve a radius well beyond their own postcode, and national operators cover regions where they have no office at all. So “no local installer” does not mean “no service available”.

What is missing: 361 companies in the directory have no geocode we can trust, so they are left out of every coverage figure on this page. That is not a small gap. It is a bit over a fifth of the directory. If those 361 are spread differently to the rest, which they may well be, our coverage picture is off.

545 postcodes against the whole country

To judge whether 545 is a big number or a small one, you need something to compare it to.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics builds a geography called Postal Areas, which approximates Australia Post postcodes for statistical use. Under the Australian Statistical Geography Standard, Edition 3 (July 2021 to June 2026), there are 2,644 Postal Areas covering the whole of Australia without gaps or overlaps. Three are non-spatial special purpose codes, so call it roughly 2,641 real ones. Source: ABS, Australian Statistical Geography Standard Edition 3, Postal Areas.

Set our 545 against that and the shape is clear enough. Companies in our directory are based in roughly one in five Australian postal areas. Four in five have nobody from our directory based in them.

Say it carefully, though. Some of those postal areas are close to empty, covering desert or national park. Others are dense suburbs. Our 545 will be weighted heavily towards the populated ones, because that is where businesses are. So the true share of people with a locally based installer is much higher than one in five. The gap is real, but it is a gap in where installers live, not a map of who can get solar.

The concentration pattern: hubs, not capitals

The interesting part is not the total. It is which postcodes hold the most companies. Here are the twenty most-served postcodes in the directory.

Toowoomba tops the list with 21 companies. Bunbury sits second with 20. Both outrank Melbourne CBD (14) and Adelaide CBD (11). Sydney’s CBD postcode does not appear on this list at all.

That looks strange until you think about what a postcode actually measures. Toowoomba and Bunbury are single regional hubs. A business serving that whole part of the state has one obvious place to put itself, so the companies pile into one postcode. Sydney has the opposite problem. Its installers are scattered across dozens of postcodes, so no single Sydney postcode collects a big number even though Sydney has far more installers in total.

So read this table as a map of concentration, not a map of supply.

Two other patterns show up. The first is industrial estates. Mitchell in the ACT, Wangara and Osborne Park in WA, and Wetherill Park in NSW are all light industrial areas. Solar companies need somewhere to store panels and park utes, so they base themselves in the trade estate and sell across the whole metro area. The second is the regional coastal centre. Bunbury, Busselton, Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Cairns, Townsville and Rockhampton all appear. These are hub towns servicing a very large surrounding area, and their installer counts reflect the size of the catchment, not the size of the town.

Queensland has seven of the twenty postcodes and Western Australia has four.

What thin local coverage costs a homeowner

If you live in a hub town, none of this affects you. If you live an hour or two out from one, it does, in four specific ways.

1. Fewer quotes means higher prices

The standard advice is to get at least three quotes. That advice quietly assumes three companies want your job. In a thin-coverage area you might get two, and one of them knows the other one’s prices.

Competition is what pushes solar pricing down. Remove it and the number on the page goes up. This is the single biggest cost of thin coverage, and it is invisible, because you never see the cheaper quote you did not receive.

2. Travel gets priced into the job

A crew driving three hours each way spends most of a working day on the road. That time is real and somebody pays for it. Sometimes it appears as a line item for travel or regional loading. More often it is folded quietly into the system price, so the same job costs more out of town with no explanation attached.

Neither approach is dishonest. What matters is knowing it is happening, so you can ask about it directly instead of assuming the difference is about quality.

3. Warranty callbacks take much longer

Your inverter warranty might promise a replacement. It does not promise somebody on your roof next Tuesday.

When the installer is based four hours away, a fault that would be a same-week visit in the suburbs becomes a “we will come out when we have another job in your area” visit. That can mean weeks. If the fault has your system switched off, those weeks are lost generation and higher power bills.

This is the part homeowners most often underestimate. Getting the system on the roof is the easy half. Getting somebody back to it three years later is the hard half.

4. You are more likely to get a travelling crew

Where local supply is thin, the work often gets filled by crews travelling in from a capital or a bigger regional centre, sometimes subcontracted rather than employed by the company you signed with.

The install itself can be perfectly good. The problem is afterwards. If the crew was passing through, your contact for a callback is a head office in another city, and the people who actually touched your roof have moved on. Chasing that is slow, and if the installing business folds, working out who owns the workmanship warranty is harder again.

What to do if you are in a thin-coverage area

You cannot conjure installers into your postcode. You can change how you run the process.

Widen the net on purpose. Ask for quotes from your nearest hub town and from the nearest capital, not just from whoever is closest. Three quotes from three genuinely separate businesses beats three quotes from one business and two of its mates. Browse our company directory or start from a state page, for example Queensland, Western Australia or New South Wales, and work outwards.

Ask about the travel charge, then ask separately about callback travel. These are two different questions, and people ask the first and forget the second. The one that matters more is: “If I need you back here under warranty in year four, do I pay for the travel then?” Get that answer before you sign, not after the fault.

Ask for a response time in writing. Not a promise to “look after you”. A number. How many business days from a reported fault to somebody physically on site. If the company will not put a number in the contract, that tells you something useful for free.

Ask who is actually doing the install. Employed staff or a subcontracted crew? Who holds the workmanship warranty? Who do you ring in year three? None of these questions are rude, and a good operator will answer them without flinching. Weight local presence above brand for after-sales. A well-known national name is not the same as somebody who can be at your place on Thursday. For the install itself, brand and equipment matter. For the ten years after it, proximity matters more. Between a national operator with no regional office and a smaller business two towns over, the smaller business is usually the safer bet for service, even if the quote is slightly higher.

Check accreditation yourself. Solar Cobber does not verify, track or display any company’s accreditation status, so do not treat a listing on our site as a tick. Check the Clean Energy Council’s own approved retailer list, and check installer accreditation with Solar Accreditation Australia, which took over accreditation in 2024.

Methodology

Sample. The Solar Cobber company directory, n=1,611 Australian solar companies, queried on 2 August 2026. Of those, 1,250 have a usable geocode and appear in the coverage figures. The remaining 361 do not and are excluded from every coverage number on this page.

What the data is. Aggregated public Google Business listing data for solar companies in our directory, including business location. Coverage figures are counts of distinct postcodes and distinct suburbs derived from those geocoded business addresses.

How it was collected. Public business listing data was aggregated into our directory and queried directly on 2 August 2026. We did not visit any site, request any quote, or contact any company.

Comparison figure. The count of 2,644 Australian Postal Areas comes from the ABS Australian Statistical Geography Standard, Edition 3 (July 2021 to June 2026), linked above, and includes three non-spatial special purpose codes.

Limitations

  1. This is a sample, not a census. Our directory of 1,611 companies is large, but it is not every solar company in Australia. Businesses without a public listing, or with a listing we have not captured, are absent. A postcode showing zero companies may simply mean we have not captured the business that operates there.

  2. 361 companies are missing from the coverage data. A bit over a fifth of the directory has no reliable geocode. If those companies are distributed differently to the geocoded ones, and there is no reason to assume they are not, our coverage counts are skewed by an unknown amount.

  3. A registered address is not a service area. This is the biggest limitation on this page. We know where companies are based. We do not know how far they travel. Many serve a wide radius, and national operators cover regions where they hold no office. The 545 figure is the number of postcodes where a company in our directory is based. It is not, and should not be quoted as, the number of postcodes where solar is available.

  4. Postcode counts measure clustering, not supply. A city whose installers are spread across many postcodes will look weaker in the most-served table than a regional hub whose installers sit in one, even when the city has far more installers overall. Sydney is the clearest example.

FAQ

Does 545 postcodes mean the rest of Australia cannot get solar?

No, and this is the most important thing to get right. It means 545 postcodes have a company from our directory based in them. Companies routinely service well beyond their own postcode, and national operators cover areas where they have no office. If no company is based near you, you can almost certainly still get a system installed. You will just have fewer choices and less price pressure.

Why does Toowoomba have more installers than Melbourne’s CBD?

Because a postcode count measures concentration. Toowoomba is one hub serving a very large area, so its installers cluster in a single postcode (21 companies as at 2 August 2026). Melbourne’s installers are spread across the whole metro area, so no single Melbourne postcode holds many. Melbourne has far more installers in total.

How many quotes should I get if I live somewhere remote?

Aim for three from genuinely separate businesses, even if that means widening your search to the nearest hub town and the nearest capital. Two quotes from the same small local market is not competition. If three is genuinely impossible, at least price the same system size and equipment with each one so you are comparing the same thing.

Will I definitely pay a travel charge?

Not always as a visible line item. Some companies charge regional travel openly, others fold it into the system price. Ask directly how travel is handled for the install, and separately how it is handled for warranty callbacks. The second answer is the one people forget to get.

Is a national company safer than a small local one?

Not automatically, and not for after-sales. A national brand gives you a bigger business behind the warranty, which helps if things go badly wrong. A local business gives you somebody who can physically show up. If the national operator has no presence anywhere near you, its warranty may be sound on paper and slow in practice.
