Fronius
GEN24 Plus
Inverter review
Our verdict
The GEN24 Plus is a well-built, well-supported hybrid that suits owners who value Fronius service and want three-phase backup or a Fronius-branded battery. Its backup is not seamless, its battery list is short and it costs more than a Sungrow hybrid, so it only makes sense if those trade-offs do not bother you.
- Best for
- Homes adding a battery now that want premium local support and optional whole-home or three-phase backup
- Look elsewhere if
- Buyers wanting uninterrupted (UPS-style) backup, a wide choice of batteries or the lowest hybrid price
- Price guide
- About A$2,500 to A$4,500 installed for the hybrid inverter alone, before any battery (2026 market range)
- Warranty
- 5 years Fronius Warranty Plus (parts, labour, transport) as standard; a further 5 years on Solar.web registration, with cover type depending on the promotion in force; battery warranted separately
Pros
- Single-phase and three-phase versions, with Full Backup available (except on the Symo 3.0 to 5.0) when paired with a battery and switching hardware
- PV Point outlet gives up to 3,000 VA from the panels in a blackout even before a battery is fitted
- Pairs with Fronius's own Reserva battery, so one company stands behind inverter and battery
- IP66 enclosure rated for -40 to +60 °C ambient
- Strong installer reputation and a local Fronius office in Victoria
Cons
- Backup is not seamless: Fronius lists a 10 second switchover for Full Backup and 15 seconds for PV Point, so clocks and computers reset
- Runs backup at 53 Hz, which (per SolarQuotes) stops other brands' AC-coupled solar inverters working during an outage
- Short battery list: Fronius names Reserva, BYD Battery-Box Premium HVS/HVM and LG FLEX
- Battery charge and discharge is capped at 22 A, about 6.2 kW on the Primo GEN24 6.0 Plus
- Costs roughly A$1,300 to A$1,700 more installed than a Sungrow SG or SH series inverter, based on Why Solar's 2026 ranges

From the manufacturer's Australian datasheet. Check the exact model number on your quote.
The Fronius GEN24 Plus is the hybrid version of Fronius’s current inverter platform: it runs your solar panels and a high-voltage battery from one box. In Australia it is sold as the Primo GEN24 Plus for single-phase homes and the Symo GEN24 Plus for three-phase homes, and installers usually quote it to owners who are adding a battery now (often to use the federal battery rebate) and who want a premium European brand rather than the cheaper Sungrow, GoodWe or Fox hybrids. It is also the upgrade target for anyone who bought a standard Primo GEN24 and later decides to add storage.
This review is based on manufacturer documentation, warranty terms, published pricing and owner and installer feedback; Solar Cobber did not test the product and was not paid by the manufacturer.
What it is and how it works
A hybrid inverter has a third input alongside the solar strings: a DC battery port. Solar power can go straight into the battery without converting to AC and back, which is slightly more efficient than an AC-coupled battery with its own inverter. The GEN24 Plus works with high-voltage batteries only (Fronius lists 150 to 455 V on the Primo 6.0 Plus and 160 to 700 V on the Symo 10.0 Plus), so the common 48 V batteries will not connect.
The hardware is shared with the standard GEN24. The Plus simply has battery and backup functions switched on, which is why a standard GEN24 can be upgraded with a paid software unlock.
On the CEC approved inverter list (checked October 2026) we found:
- Primo GEN24 Plus 3.0 to 6.0, listed to January 2027, with newer SC-suffix versions listed to July 2029
- Primo GEN24 Plus 8.0 and 10.0, listed to August 2029
- Symo GEN24 Plus 3.0 to 5.0 (to December 2026) and Symo GEN24 Plus 6.0 to 12.0 SC (to March 2028)
Battery choices. Fronius’s technical data names the BYD Battery-Box Premium HVS and HVM and the LG FLEX. In 2025 Fronius launched its own Reserva battery in Australia; the July 2026 Australian datasheet lists 6.31 to 15.79 kWh usable per tower, LFP chemistry, IP65 and compatibility with the Primo GEN24 Plus, Symo GEN24 Plus and Verto Plus. SolarQuotes reported in 2025 that the single-phase Primo GEN24 Plus supported only the 6.3 and 9.5 kWh Reserva sizes, so confirm the current pairing table before you accept a larger single-phase Reserva quote.
Specs that matter in Australia
Backup is real, but not seamless. This is the spec that most often surprises owners.
- PV Point is built into every GEN24. In a blackout, one dedicated outlet delivers up to 3,000 VA, with a 15 second switchover on the Primo 6.0 Plus. Without a battery it only works while the panels are producing.
- Full Backup needs a battery plus an external switching device (the Fronius backup switch and controller). Fronius lists a 10 second switchover. Your lights go out briefly, clocks reset and desktop computers restart. If you need uninterrupted power for medical equipment or a home office, budget for a UPS or look at a hybrid with a faster changeover.
- 53 Hz backup frequency. Fronius runs backup at 53 Hz. SolarQuotes notes this stops other brands’ AC-coupled solar inverters from running in parallel during an outage, so an existing second inverter on your roof will not help in a blackout.
Battery power. The battery port is limited to 22 A, which Fronius rates at 6,200 W on the Primo 6.0 Plus. That is enough for most single-phase evening loads, but a 10 kW-class Sungrow hybrid can charge and discharge harder, which matters if you want to fill a large battery quickly or run big loads off it.
Three phase. Fronius lists Full Backup on the Symo GEN24 Plus as supporting three-phase loads, which matters if your home has three-phase air conditioning or a pool pump you want to keep running. Fronius also states Full Backup is not available on the Symo GEN24 3.0 to 5.0, so a small three-phase unit only gets PV Point.
Heat and placement. IP66 and a -40 to +60 °C ambient rating mean outdoor installation is fine, but keep it out of afternoon sun to avoid output derating. Batteries have their own limits: Reserva is rated -20 to +55 °C and for indoor or protected outdoor locations.
Tracker currents. As on the standard Primo GEN24, tracker one takes 22 A and tracker two 12 A on the 3.0 to 6.0 kW single-phase models, so the main roof face should go on tracker one.
VPP and rebates. Since 1 May 2026 the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program applies an STC factor of 6.8 per usable kWh for the first 14 kWh (CHOICE estimates about $272 per kWh at a $40 certificate price), dropping to 60% of that rate for 14 to 28 kWh and 15% for 28 to 50 kWh. The battery must be on the CEC approved list and VPP-capable. Reserva and BYD HVS and HVM are on the CEC battery list as of October 2026, though the BYD HVM listing expires in December 2026 and HVS in January 2027. VPP support is narrower than for Sungrow: Wattever’s October 2026 table lists Reserva with Amber SmartShift only. See our guides to the battery rebate and to how VPPs work.
Price in Australia
Fronius does not publish retail prices, and very few published guides price a full GEN24 Plus battery system. What we found:
| What | Range | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Fronius GEN24 Plus, installed, inverter only | A$2,500 to A$4,500 | Why Solar, 2026 |
| Sungrow SG and SH series, installed, inverter only | A$1,200 to A$2,800 | Why Solar, 2026 |
| Upgrade from standard GEN24 to Plus (software) | about A$650 to A$1,000 | SolarQuotes, May 2024 |
| Fronius Reserva battery | Not published in AUD | SolarQuotes notes it is “reassuringly expensive” |
The battery is the biggest cost. Add the battery price, Full Backup switching hardware if you want it, and switchboard work, then subtract the federal battery discount. Our battery cost guide has typical totals by battery size. When comparing quotes, make sure each one states whether the price is before or after the Cheaper Home Batteries discount.
Warranty: the fine print
Inverter. The GEN24 Plus carries the same Fronius warranty as other Fronius inverters in Australia:
- Five years of Fronius Warranty Plus as standard, covering materials, labour and transport Australia-wide.
- A further five years on Solar.web registration. For installs from 1 October 2024 to 31 December 2025 this extension was Warranty Plus under a published promotion; earlier terms gave parts-only cover for years six to ten. Fronius Australia’s promotions page still advertises the free Warranty Plus extension in October 2026 without stating an end date, so get the terms for your install date in writing.
- Claims go through your installer to Fronius Australia (Tullamarine, Victoria). Fronius may ask for the invoice, serial number and Certificate of Electrical Safety.
Battery. The battery has its own warranty. Fronius’s Australian Reserva datasheet states 10 years to 70% state of health. BYD batteries are warranted by BYD, not Fronius, and Fronius says BYD and LG batteries cannot be registered on its platform. Ask who you call if the system faults and it is not obvious whether the inverter or battery is to blame.
What owners and installers report
Praise. Fronius holds a 4.8 out of 5 rating from more than 9,300 owner ratings on SolarQuotes (brand-wide), and has topped the SolarQuotes Installers’ Choice inverter category repeatedly, most recently in 2025. Owners and installers credit reliability and Fronius’s local support.
Complaint patterns.
- Changeover delay. SolarQuotes highlights the backup delay and the need to reset appliance clocks after each outage.
- Mixed-brand systems in blackouts. The 53 Hz backup frequency stops other brands’ AC-coupled inverters from contributing during an outage.
- Battery recovery after a deep outage. On the Clean Energy Reviews forum, owners of GEN24 and BYD HVM systems report that if the battery hits its minimum charge during a long blackout, the system does not restart on its own and needs a manual reset. The thread records Fronius support saying in April 2024 that a firmware fix was in development, with a January 2026 post still describing it as a firmware limitation. This is a forum report, not a confirmed defect, but it is worth asking about if you are rural or outage-prone.
- Solar.web. As with the standard GEN24, owners report communication errors and a less friendly app than some rivals.
Recalls. The CEC’s product recall register, checked October 2026, lists no Fronius inverter recalls.

Choose the GEN24 Plus if you want Fronius support, three-phase backup, or a single company standing behind inverter and battery via Reserva. Choose the Sungrow SH RS if you want near-instant backup, more battery power and a lower price, and you are comfortable with Sungrow’s patchier support record. Avoid buying new into SMA Sunny Boy Smart Energy unless you have firm service commitments, as SMA withdrew from Australian residential sales in 2026. Choose a standard Primo GEN24 if the battery is more than a couple of years away.
Questions to ask your installer
- Which battery are you quoting, is it on the CEC list today, and is the price before or after the federal battery discount?
- If you are quoting Reserva on single phase, is that size on Fronius’s current Primo GEN24 Plus compatibility list?
- Is Full Backup included (switch and controller), or only PV Point? Which circuits will be backed up?
- Do I have any other inverter on site that will stop working during an outage because of the 53 Hz backup frequency?
- What happens if the battery runs flat during a multi-day outage: will the system restart on its own when the sun comes up?
- Will you register the inverter on Solar.web and claim the warranty extension, and who handles battery warranty claims?
- Which VPPs will accept this inverter and battery combination in my area?
FAQ
Is the Fronius GEN24 Plus a good hybrid inverter?
It is a well-built, well-supported hybrid with a strong installer reputation. Its weaknesses are a non-seamless backup changeover, a short battery list and a higher price than Chinese competitors.
Does the GEN24 Plus give whole-home backup?
It can, with a compatible battery and Fronius’s external backup switching hardware. Out of the box it only has PV Point, a single 3,000 VA outlet.
How long does the GEN24 Plus take to switch to backup?
Fronius lists 10 seconds for Full Backup and 15 seconds for PV Point on the Primo 6.0 Plus. Expect a short blackout before backup power returns.
Which batteries work with the Fronius GEN24 Plus?
Fronius lists its own Reserva plus BYD Battery-Box Premium HVS and HVM and LG FLEX. All must be high-voltage batteries. Check the current list for your exact inverter size.
Can I upgrade my Primo GEN24 to a GEN24 Plus?
Yes. The standard GEN24 can be converted to Plus with a paid software upgrade, so you do not need to replace the inverter to add a battery.
Is the Fronius GEN24 Plus eligible for the battery rebate?
The rebate is paid on the battery, not the inverter. The battery must be on the CEC approved list and VPP-capable, and the installer must be accredited.
Find an installer
GEN24 Plus systems need careful backup design and battery pairing, so choose an installer with Fronius hybrid experience. Use our installer directory to find one near you, and check whether your state adds its own incentive on top of the federal discount.
